Pool paintings in Los Angeles, double portraits in London, photographic collages, opera sets, fax drawings, iPad landscapes — each shift read at the time as a detour, and in hindsight as the same question asked again: how do you put the experience of looking onto a flat surface?

He is the most valuable living British artist by auction record, but the market that matters to collectors is quieter than the headlines: the etchings, the inkjet series, the Yorkshire landscapes, and the small window studies made in Normandy during lockdown. Editions circulate steadily; the strongest impressions do not.
