Fayez Barakat

Barakat spent four decades as one of the world’s leading dealers in antiquities before he began painting seriously — a life spent looking at five thousand years of objects, then turned outward onto canvas.

The paintings are dense, high-key and built in layers, closer to Abstract Expressionism than to anything in the contemporary field. They are also unmistakably the work of someone who has handled a great deal of very old art.
